MRI Physics: Tips, Tricks, and Just So You’ll Know Rays

The field of medical imaging has undergone rapid advancements in recent times, with MRI being one of the most widely used diagnostic tools. MRI requires high levels of both technical and clinical expertise. However, the full potential of MRI can only be realized when radiology professionals have a strong understanding of its underlying physics principles.  This course will cover the essentials for modern diagnostic imaging and patient care integration while exploring advancements in radiologic technology and their real-world applications.  Topics include key modalities such as X-ray, MRI, CT, and ultrasound with a focus on image interpretation, clinical application, and ethical radiology practices. Imaging techniques and safety protocols will also be examined.

At the end of this course attendees will be equipped with actionable skills and tools to deliver accurate, high-quality results, enhance patient outcomes, communicate imaging results effectively, and make informed decisions in collaborative clinical settings.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain the principles of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and its role in medical imaging.
  2. Identify the difference between transmitter bandwidth and receiver bandwidth in MRI systems.
  3. Apply knowledge of receiver bandwidth to optimize imaging parameters for clinical cases.
  4. Discuss the purpose and mechanisms of inversion recovery sequences, with a focus on Short Tau Inversion Recovery (STIR).
  5. Describe the components of the "Image Contrast Triangle" and how they influence MRI contrast.
